Automated equipment from Steinert lets Neville Metals shred with confidence.
Neville Metals in Pittsburgh entered the shredding market with confidence in late 2004 after installing a new Texas Shredder Inc.plant and downstream separating equipment provided by SteinertUS.
Neville Metals President Jim Snyder says the production of clean grades of nonferrous metals has occurred from the very start-up of the plant and its downstream Steinert system.
As an added bonus, the series of Steinert separators are configured with total digital system controls. The separators perform their tasks without the need for production workers to attend to them or provide manual us that we have just started in the last 45 days, but it is working marvelously.” Snyder says of his downstream sorting line. Among the Steinert equipment deployed there are Steinert Eddy Current Separators (ECS) and the Steinert All Metal Separator.
Manual sorting is not part of the equation at the Neville Metals shredding plant because the ISS scans the residue for every last trace of metal. The automated aspects of the Steinert system have allowed Neville Metals to hold down labor costs associated with its new shredder plant.

American Iron & Metal orders a second helping of Steinert equipment.

Operating an automobile shredder plant and its downstream system efficiently takes a combination ofcapitalinvestment, industry knowledge and dedication to maintenance and systems management. Pierre Paquet of American Iron & Metal Co. Inc. (AIM), East Montreal, Quebec, Canada, says he is glad that he has been able to rely on Steinert people and equipment to make this difficult job easier.
Pierre, the production manager at AIM, says the company has relied on a close working relationship with Texas Shredder Inc., San Antonio, and SteinertUS, St. Petersburg, Fla., since entering the auto shredding business in 2000.
Bright yellow Steinert equipment can be found at AIM’s East Montreal auto shredder plant in the form of two ISS (induction sorting system) machines, two eddy current separators, two drum magnets and a cross-belt magnet. The equipment has performed so well and so reliably that AIM will be installing a nearly identical Steinert downstream system at its Quebec City auto shredder facility, which is currently under construction.

Steinert ISS turns the dream of full metal recovery into reality at Metal Management.
In their roles with Metal Management at its North Haven, Conn., facility, Jim Mosebach and Brian Sackett have studied for years how auto shredder operators can maximize their metal recovery yields from downstream shredder systems.
The North Haven facility processes the nonferrous and nonmetallic streams produced by the Metal Management shredder in North Haven and by the company’s Newark, N.J., shredder, as well as other streams of mixed material generated in the northeastern United States.
The plant has employed a Steinert eddy current unit for 10 years, and more recently has added a Steinert Induction Sorting System (ISS) on the waste stream after the eddy current to further boost nonferrous metals recovery. Mosebach and Sackett say the ISS has, like the Steinert eddy current before it, performed above and beyond expectations.
“We’re catching virtually all the nonferrous,” says Sackett. “It has made a tremendous difference with stainless steel, recovering more stainless than we were able to recover previously.”
Metal Management chose the Steinert ISS after taking a thorough look at the machine and the separation techniques it employs.
